Apexi Power FC Upgrade – Worth the Wait?
Installing the Apexi Power FC was a long-awaited upgrade for my Toyota Celica. While other ECUs like Haltech and Microtech exist, I went with Apexi Power FC because it’s plug-and-play. No wiring headaches. No custom mounts. It fits directly into the factory harness, making life much easier for both owner and tuner.
I’d also read glowing reviews on NewCelica.org, where many users claimed solid horsepower gains with proper tuning. So, I took the plunge.
Apexi Power FC Installation in KL
The install happened at a well-known tuning shop in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur. I was excited, but things didn’t go as planned.
Issue #1: Dyno Malfunction
At first, the dyno setup wouldn’t read correctly, which immediately raised concerns. After a bit of troubleshooting, the team discovered the problem — a faulty dyno cable. Fortunately, they managed to fix it quickly by re-soldering the wiring. With that resolved, we moved on to the next phase of tuning.
Issue #2: Performance Drop
Halfway through tuning, the power curve dipped unexpectedly. A quick inspection revealed a broken lift bolt under the engine cover. We replaced it quickly, but the issue remained.
With time running out, I had no choice. I reinstalled the stock ECU and drove the Celica back to Penang.
Apexi Power FC Troubleshooting in Penang
Back home, I visited Ah Chuan from TOM’s Penang. He scanned the car using an OBD reader and pulled up two error codes:
- OCV (Oil Control Valve) – lift side
- VVT-i cam pulley
To be safe, I decided to replace the OCV, cam pulley, and rocker shaft. But that meant waiting two months for parts to arrive.
Finally, the Celica Runs Right
Once all the new parts were installed, the Celica fired up cleanly. The misfiring was gone. The lift engaged properly. Everything felt responsive again. But I haven’t returned to the dyno yet.
Why? Because finding an experienced tuner for Apexi Power FC in Penang is proving difficult. I don’t want to risk poor tuning on this setup. I’ll wait for the right expert.
What’s Next?
For now, my Celica is back on the road and running strong. But the real tuning potential of the Apexi Power FC is still untapped. If you’re in Penang and know a reliable tuner who works with Apexi systems, do reach out!
Until then, I’ll keep enjoying the drive — and slowly prep for the next tuning session.
