Building a Better Kancil: Engine Back Where It Belongs
The journey of building a better Kancil continues. I recently paid a visit to my ride and saw some major progress. The engine is finally back in the engine bay! That alone is a huge milestone.
Even better, the engine started perfectly. No odd noises. No warning signs. It ran as smooth as I could hope for after all the work done. While there are still some minor issues to fix, this win definitely boosts morale.
Minor Issues Still to Fix
Despite the good news, a few things still need attention:
- RPM Meter – It’s acting up. This issue actually existed before the engine makeover.
- HID Bulb – The passenger-side HID bulb is blown. Thankfully, I have a spare set.
- Alarm Wiring – It wasn’t installed after the JBJL transplant. I need a proper alarm system now.
- Aircond System – It works, but it’s filthy. My mechanic recommends a full cleaning.
- EPS Not Working – We’re still diagnosing this. Could be the EPS module, motor sensor, or speed sensor.
We also changed the drive shaft joint to keep things reliable.
Another small win: the brake disc. Since it’s still thick, my mechanic suggested skimming it instead of buying a new one. It saves cost, and the result looks great.

Wishlist for Building a Better Kancil
Now, let’s talk about what’s next. Here’s my upgrade wishlist, ranked by priority:
- New Alarm System – I won’t reuse the stock Perodua alarm. I need something more reliable and secure.
- HID System Replacement – As mentioned, I have backups ready.
- New Headlamps – Still deciding between OEM plastic ones or aftermarket crystal types.
- Window Tinting – The old film is fading. In Malaysia’s heat, this is a must.
- Adjustable Side Mirrors – Not urgent, but it’s in the pipeline.
- De-cat the Exhaust – Time to remove the catalytic converter for a small performance boost.
- New Intake Piping – There’s a hole in the old one caused by bad welding. It needs to go.
- New Rims (14”/15”) – 13” performance tires are hard to find, so a rim upgrade is due.
