Fitting New Tyres for the Test Drive
The engine was finally alive again, so it was time to test the Satria on the road. But the car had been parked for years. The old tyres were completely unusable. I needed new tyres before anything else.
I headed to my regular tyre shop. My first choice was the Bridgestone RE004, but they only had the 195/55/R15 size. To avoid rubbing issues, I picked the older RE003 in 195/50/R15 instead. They cost RM205 each including balancing.

While I was there, I noticed they also carried Toyo TR1 in the same size for RM165 each. A great option if you’re on a budget.
I installed the new tyres on the front wheels. For the rear, I temporarily used a friend’s spare set. Once I roll the fenders, I’ll consider upgrading to the 195/55/R15. Maybe I’ll go with the RE004 next time, or if I’m feeling bold, the grippy Yokohama AD08R.
Old Tyres Out, New Tyres In
Back at the workshop, I removed the old tyres. They were hard, cracked, and unsafe. The new RE003s looked great. Interestingly, the ones I received were week 16 of 2020 production. It’s surprising that Bridgestone still produces RE003 even after releasing RE004.

While changing the tyres, my eyes landed on a beautiful set of Enkei RPF1 wheels. Should I get them next? Still thinking.

New Tyres On, But Oil Smoke Appears
With the tyres fitted, I finally drove the car. But then — a new issue surfaced. During hard acceleration, thick smoke came out of the exhaust. That joy from the new tyres faded fast.
It was obvious — the engine was burning oil. Time for a full check.
We started by inspecting the piston rings. Compression was good. Next, we tested the PCV valve — it worked fine.
That left a few suspects:
- Valve seals
- Turbocharger (turbine)
- Cylinder head leakage (I hope not — that’s a big one)
Even at idle, smoke continued puffing from the tailpipe. The investigation is ongoing, but I’m narrowing it down.
New Tyres Are Just the Beginning
The new tyres gave the Satria a solid grip and a much-needed update. But the engine issue is a major concern. Despite the smoke, I’m still happy with the progress.
Fixing a long-parked car is never smooth. One step at a time. New tyres today — hopefully a clean exhaust tomorrow.
