It’s been a while since I bought this car, and after years of hard work and daily use, the wear-and-tear components have finally started to show their age.
The first issue I encountered was the gear shifter connector, which cost me RM180 to replace. Then in May this year, the engine mountings gave way. I decided to go with genuine VW parts, which set me back RM1350 for the engine, gearbox, and bottom mount, plus RM100 for labor — bringing the total to RM1450. For those on a tighter budget, OEM parts are available for around RM700+ for both engine and gearbox mounts.
Earlier this month, during a routine service, I discovered an oil leak. After some investigation, I found that the leak typically comes from the timing cover side gasket, the crank oil seal, or both. Since both parts only cost me RM220 (genuine VW, including shipping), I opted to replace both just to be safe.
If you notice oil leaking down the side of the engine and reaching the top of the oil pan, it’s likely one or both of these parts are the culprit. For reference, I’ve included a parts diagram below — part #6 is the crank oil seal, and part #8 is the timing cover side gasket.
Hopefully, this helps anyone facing similar issues!
